Upcoming Hearings, Meetings and Rides

LAST UPDATE: December 15, 2003
This list will be updated quarterly. New  information in RED.

The following projects may be of interest to area cyclists. For information about any of these, call the designated contact person or 503-823-CYCL where no contact person is listed.

Recently Completed Projects

  • SW Broadway (Burnside to Jefferson) Bicycle Lanes Completed as part of a street repaving project. Ride the Broadway Bridge all the way through downtown on a bike lane!
  • SW 3rd Ave bike lanes and wheel gutter (SW Madison to Market) Completed as part of a street repaving project. Wheel gutter provides bike access to path through the Auditorium District.
  • SW Bertha Court (Vermont to Capitol Hwy) Recently reconstructed, this segment will be striped with bicycle lanes when the weather allows. This roadway will provide a better connection from Vermont Avenue into Hillsdale.
  • NW Lovejoy (Broadway Bridge to 14th) Let us know how the streetcar platform "bypass" (eastbound near NW 11th) works for you.
  • Columbia Slough Trail (N. Portland Road to Denver) Paved path along north bank of slough; also a bike/pedestrian bridge crossing and path through Columbia Blvd Wastewater Treatment Plant to Portsmouth bike lanes and Peninsula Crossing Trail
  • N Portland Boulevard (Willamette to I-5) We restriped this one-mile segment to provide better bicycle connections between St. Johns and the Interstate MAX light rail line.
  • N Interstate Avenue (Rose Quarter to Kenton) With short gaps near the Portland Boulevard and Lombard light rail station areas, Tri-Met’s Interstate MAX project rebuilt the street with bicycle lanes.
  • NE Couch & Davis Streets (NE 72 to 32nd) Bicycle Boulevard improvements to these streets included changing stop signs to allow better flow of bicycle traffic. The project also included crossing refuges on 39th Avenue at both Couch and Ankeny Streets.
  • SE Johnson Creek Boulevard (36th to 45th) This federally-funded reconstruction of Johnson Creek Boulevard added bicycle lanes to the roadway. This completed link now provides an on-street connection between the two completed segments of the Springwater Corridor via Spokane (or Umatilla) to the Tacoma Street overcrossing of McLoughlin Boulevard, along Johnson Creek Boulevard, to where it crosses the Springwater Corridor Trail near 45th Avenue.

Upcoming and Current Projects

In North Portland:

Greeley Avenue (Killingworth to Interstate Ave)

Description: This project will install bike lanes on N. Greeley Avenue from N. Killingsworth to N. Interstate avenue. One travel lane will be removed in each direction from Killingsworth to Emerson st. Additional bike and vehicle signing will be installed to facilitate a safer crossing at the Southbound Going on-ramp, and the I-5 exit ramp. Lane line striping on Greeley south of Going st. will be adjusted slightly to accommodate the new bike lanes. This striping project will be coordinated and scheduled for installation with a new asphalt overlay project by the Bureau of Maintenance in the Spring of '04.
Contact: Todd Liles at 503-823-6992.

In the Central City:

Morrison Bridge Bike/Pedestrian Project
Description: Plan for and design a bicycle and pedestrian path across the Morrison Bridge.
Status: $250,000 has been identified for planning and developing construction drawings. $1.5 million in construction funds have been allocated from the Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Fund. Following meetings with more than 20 stakeholder groups and a public open house in January, 2003, the City and County determined a final, conceptual design. This design incorporates elements to be contributed by other construction projects. Final design elements include a 15-foot wide shared pathway; a barrier between the path and travel lanes; a sidewalk and eastbound bicycle lane up the Alder Street Ramp; improvements at the base of the Naito Parkway Ramp to create a larger area for pedestrians and cyclists; and separating the Water Avenue off-ramp from the I-5 off-ramp. Construction is slated to begin in 2005.
Contact: Multnomah County is the lead agency for this project. Kenneth Huntley, a Multnomah County bridge engineer, is managing the project. Contact him at 503-988-3757#243.

NW Naito Parkway (Front Ave) (Harrison to Davis)
Description: Reconstruct roadway, add bicycle lanes
Status: Funds have been identified; design begin 2001; construction estimated for 2005-6.
Contact: Joanna Guzzeta, Portland Office of Transportation, 503-823-7041

In Northeast Portland

Rose Quarter Scramble Signal
Description: Northbound cyclists exiting the Eastbank Esplanade at the Steel Bridge are required to make a two-phase crossing to the bicycle lanes on Interstate Avenue, if they wish to continue north, or contend with high volumes of fast-moving, right-turning automobiles if they wish to continue east. To address these problems the City will install a bicycle-only traffic signal at the intersection of Oregon, Interstate, and Lloyd. When activated, this signal will stop all automotive traffic and allow cyclists to travel diagonally across the intersection. Cyclists will also be able to travel east onto Oregon St without conflicts from motorists turning right onto Lloyd Boulevard. Pedestrians will also be able to cross the intersection. This project, funded by a small grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation, may open up as early as February, 2004. Contact: Roger Geller, (503) 823-7671.

In Southeast:

SE Hawthorne Boulevard
Description: Improve pedestrian mobility, bicycle access & parking. Project will include bicycle parking and better parallel routes for cyclists.
Status: Plan adopted by Council.  Project is underway, including designs for improved bicycle parking in the main Hawthorne commercial district. Part of the improvements call for improving bicycling conditions along the Lincoln-Harrison bikeway. Also being considered is classifying 34th Avenue as a bikeway between Gladstone and Ankeny to provide north-south access to the Hawthorne District from the adjoining neighborhoods. For more information go to our SE Hawthorne Boulevard Project web site.
Contact: Jean Senechal, City of Portland Office of Transportation 503-823-7211

Springwater CorridorThree Bridges Project
Description: Build three bridges as part of Springwater Corridor Trail to cross McLoughlin Boulevard, Johnson Creek, and rail tracks.
Status: Managed by Portland Parks and Recreation, design work for this project is currently underway. When completed, the landward portion trail will terminate at SE 19th and Ochoco. For more information go to Portland Parks web page http://www.parks.ci.portland.or.us/Planning/Springwater3Bridges.htm
Contact: Riley Whitcomb, Portland Parks Bureau, 503-823-6148

Bybee Bridge Reconstruction

Beginning in February 2004 the Bybee Bridge will be demolished for complete reconstruction. This will result in detours to either Tacoma Street or Holgate Avenue during the construction period. The new bridge, slated to open in late in 2004 will include full bicycle lanes and sidewalks. Contact: Joanna Guzzetta, City of Portland Office of Transportation 503-823-7041.

In Northwest Portland

Shared lane markings are being considered for NW 19th between Hoyt and Couch, where the bicycle lane was planned to end. See the Proposal to Implement Shared Lane Markings for the status of that part of the project.  Part of this project includes making Couch and two-way street between Broadway and 10th Avenue, cutting a curb ramp on Couch at 15th/16th, and striping a contra-flow bike lane on NW 24th Avenue in the block between Flanders and Glisan.
